ISC Networking and Telecommunications Email Service

In late summer 2008, Pobox hardware and software will be upgraded to provide integrated, standards-based communications services with PennKey integration. The software we'll be using is Zimbra, which was chosen after a product evaluation and in consultation with Pobox IT Directors. Zimbra offers integrated email (including a beautiful new webmail interface), calendaring (including free-busy sharing with Exchange), document sharing and even IM.

However, Zimbra does not offer personal web pages, FTP, shell access, host-based email, or the kind of unrestricted and restricted list service that we now have on Pobox. We have discussed the tradeoffs (cost, usage levels, alternatives, desired new features) with Pobox IT Directors, and have agreed on a phasing-out or transition of those services over the course of the next several months.

Timeline for Elimination of Non-Email Services and Alternatives

Service Date of Elimination Alternatives
Personal homepages
  • 2008-02-08 - Weekly usage reports to admins start
  • 2008-02-08 - Elimination of makehome application
  • 2008-03-04 - Creation of Student Groups virtual host; student groups could start to migrate pages any time after this date.
2008-04-01 There are many free services available that will host a user's web site. Some of the more popular ones are: You are sure to find many others by doing an Internet search. ISC does not endorse any of these services but lists these as a starting point.
Host-based email clients
  • 2008-03-04 - Weekly usage reports to admins start
  • 2008-04-21 - Wrapper shell added so that any invocation of the host-based client would include a message that the client will no longer be available.
2008-05-06 Please see the Computing Products page for the list of the campus supported email clients.
Lists
  • 2008-04-07 - Weekly usage reports to admins start
  • 2008-04-07 - Process to convert existing lists to Listserv lists will be available.
  • 2008-05-06 - Notification message added to the list-menu application notifying users that the service will no longer be available.
2008-06-03 As a replacement for the Pobox list service, users can switch to using the ISC N&T Listserv service. Users who wish to switch lists to the Listserv service can do so at any time. There will be no Listserv charges (setup or semi-annual) for lists moving from Pobox to Listserv, until 2008-07-01. At that time, we will apply the ongoing charges. We will support virtual domain addressing for lists migrated to the Listserv service. More information on migrating lists is available.

Please note that Zimbra does have personal "contact groups" which can be shared with other Zimbra users. These contact groups could then be used as restricted lists, but only if the senders to the list all have Zimbra accounts. We are still testing this function and will send more information in the near future.

There are also sites that will offer free groups like: You are sure to find many others by doing an Internet search. ISC does not endorse any of these services but lists these as a starting point.
FTP & Shell access
  • 2008-06-28 - Weekly usage reports to admins start
  • 2008-07-05 - MOTD will contain a notification that server logins will no longer be available.
